Reading

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.

Our reading curriculum is designed so that children experience rich, wide-ranging texts from children’s classics to modern authors, renowned poetry to songs from popular music.

Discrete reading lessons are taught daily at The Rydal Academy and reading is also developed throughout our full curriculum. Reading lessons are collaborative experiences filled with opportunities for discussion and a strong emphasis on understanding vocabulary and its effect on the audience.

We use Accelerated Reader to promote independent home reading, which develops competence in all students and is based on proven research and practices. This programme allows children to monitor their own performance, set targets and continually improve on their previous best.

In addition to Accelerated Reader, all children also have individual access to Reading Eggs for further reading practice both in school and at home.

For more information on early reading, please also see our ‘phonics’ section.
